More than 100 people showed up to Native Books for "Kai the Opihi Gets the Point" book launch on Saturday night. Thanks to Sharon Roddy, Gay Jennings, and Amanda Maluhia Rang for all their hard work putting this event together! We had great music by Ualei, ono pupus and a visit from "Kai" the Opihi. The children who attended eagerly awaited to hear Gail Omoto read "Kai's story" about "Hoomau" or perseverance. After storytelling, Sweets Wright, Kelii Puchalski, and Dawn Lui lead the children to get up and move to Ke Kino and Nā Waihooluu from Nā Mele O Tūtū and Me CD. After the entertainment, Everyone lined up to get their book signed by Gail & Garrett Omoto and Jan and Judy Dill. "We sold many books, It was a great turn out!" said Keri Voss.
Kai the Opihi Gets the Point is about adventure, bravery, and wisdom. Kai is an Opihi who struggles with his fear of the ocean and the resulting fact his shell is flat and not pointy like all the other Opihi. His friends try to help solve his problem, but it is finally Tūtū Opihi who gives Kai the needed insight and courage to overcome his dilemma. Kai the Opihi Gets the Point models for our children the value of intergenerational wisdom and the Hawaiian value "Hoomau" or perseverance. The lesson of Kai's story-"Cling and don't fear"- is an important concept to help prepare our younger generations for the challenges of life!
